Who is this session for?

This session is aimed at anyone working/volunteering in or with the Southwark voluntary and community sector, who is new to the area, new to the VCS, who is feeling confused, who needs an update or just wants to know more about the sector and/or about CAS’s research findings. It may be particularly useful for trustees and managers.

Key areas and information to be covered:

•   Jargonbusting: What is the VCS/non-profit sector?

•   What organisations does it include?

•   Ideas/debates about the VCS, its distinctiveness and its role in society

•   Southwark’s history, demography and areas of need, and the roots of the VCS

•   Key information about the Southwark VCS
    (scale and change, activities, funding, economic and social value including ‘multiplier effect’, areas of challenge and vulnerability)

•   Building up a picture of the varied VCS beyond the bare facts

Key learning outcomes:

•   Understand what we mean by the non-profit sector or VCS ,and its changing position in society

•   Understand how the VCS has developed to meet particular local needs and how needs are changing

•   Know some key information about the scale, activities and funding of Southwark’s VCS

•   Know about common areas of vulnerability and challenge in the VCS and some introductions to what CAS tries to do to help

•   Have ideas of how to talk about the value of the VCS and individual organisations

•   Know some starting points for finding out more for yourself about the VCS, local needs, local decisionmaking and the support available
